Fair Work Australia has ordered a ballot of Bundaberg Sugar workers on their plans to take industrial action to protect leave entitlements.
The Australian Workers’ Union (AWU) applied to Fair Work Australia for protected industrial action to protect their long-held ’travel leave’ entitlement of five days each year.
The ballot, to be conducted by the Australian Electoral Commission, will close on 19 August.
AWU senior industrial advocate Chris Simpson said workers unanimously supported the application to Fair Work Australia.
’Our members are angry with the persistent attempts by local management of Bundaberg Sugar to reduce their leave entitlements with the obvious impacts on their families,’ he said.
Bundaberg Sugar is a grower, miller, refiner, and marketer of sugar and related products.
The company is Queensland’s largest cane grower and owns and operates several sugar mills in Queensland.
The AWU fears a victory for Bundaberg Sugar could lead to an industry-wide loss of the travel leave entitlement.
