The Dominican Republic is shipping sugar to the European Union under a new economic partnership that officials say could eventually triple the country's sugar exports.

The first shipment of 12,000 tons of brown sugar has been sent to France and a second shipment of 20,000 tons of sugar destined for several European countries will arrive in November, Faustino Jimenez, director of the National Sugar Institute, said Thursday.
