The Ministry of Water Resources announced that 35 per cent of the works on Tendaho and Kessem irrigation dams have been completed.
The Kessem, Tendaho and Koga Dams Project Coordinator with the Ministry, Moges Ayele, told WIC Friday that construction of the dams launched to develop sugar cane over 80,000 hectares of land in and around Kessem, Tendaho, Dubti and Aysaita areas a year ago has been expedited.
He said the construction is being undertaken by local contractors at a cost of 1.7 billion birr allocated by the government and added that had it been executed by foreign contractors it would have cost 5.7 billion birr.
Upon completion of the dams in the coming December, the sugar production of the country which stands at 275,000 tons would quadruple, according to Moges.
The project will also enable the local communities to benefit from the production of sugar cane on their plots.
The Tendaho and Kessem dams have the capacity to hold 2.3 billion cubic meters of water,it was learnt.
According to the coordinator, the dams, in addition to the irrigation development activities, will help prevent the recurrent flooding of the areas.
