The employees of Finchaa, Methara, and Wenji sugar factories who have been complaining about salary increment and other infrastructure have received a salary increase after two years..

The increments followed after 700 employees of Finchaa went on strike last week after giving the National Federation of Farm Plantation Fishery and Agro Industry Trade Unions, Sugar Development Agency, and the factory management a 10-day notice.

They had also complained about a shortage of clean water and housing as well as a shortage of protective clothing and equipment, according sources from the federation.

The employees received an increment between 50pc and 75pc. Their wages have increased from 12.40 Br to 19.30 Br and from 14.80 Br to 23.25 Br per day according to the source.

Although Wenji and Methara sugar factories have threatened to strike, they got back to work after they were notified that the increment is being considered, Gebeyehw Adugna, president of the National Federation of Farm Plantation Fishery and Agro Industry Trade Unions, told Fortune.

Employees at Finchaa stopped work for two days because their claim was not answered for 10 months due to the new formation, according to the president.

However, it was delayed until now by the transition of the Ethiopian Sugar Development Agency, which was established in 2007/08, to the Ethiopian Sugar Development Corporation, according to sources close to the agency.
