Fiji : Sugar union chief resigns
AFTER four years at the helm of the country's largest farmers' representative organisation, Jain Kumar relinquished the presidency to focus on his position as Sugar Cane Growers Council chairman.
Mr Kumar said during his term as president of the National Farmers Union (NFU), he had tried his best to represent and protect the interests of its members.
He said the workload that he assumed following his appointment as SCGC chairman last year was enormous and he felt it appropriate that he step down as NFU president.
He said his decision to step down as president would also allow him to represent the interests of all farmers in the country.
After making the announcement at the NFU general body meeting at Korovuto Secondary School in Nadi, Mr Kumar nominated former Rakiraki parliamentarian Sanjeet Maharaj for the position.
Mr Maharaj, who was serving as NFU vice president and Rakiraki branch president, was endorsed by the members at the meeting.
Mr Maharaj thanked members for their support and promised to continue with the work carried out by Mr Kumar.
Mr Maharaj said he would work closely with all stakeholders to ensure NFU supported the interim Government's efforts and initiatives to revive the industry and maintain its viability.
He said he would always work on the wishes and needs of farmers in trying to improve the industry as a whole. He urged farmers to cooperate in improving the industry for the sake of future generations.
