The Fiji Trade Union Congress is calling on the Fiji Sugar Corporation to enter into negotiations over a proposed pay cut for workers in the industry.

The Corporation has announced a 15-percent pay cut across the board but the Trade Union Congress says no discussions have taken place despite existing agreements with unions to enter into talks prior to any salary reduction.

The General Secretary of the Trade Union, Felix Anthony says the Corporation’s plans are unfair as employees should not be held responsible for its cashflow problems brought on by recent mill upgrades.

He says a letter has been sent to the Corporation, demanding a meeting on the issue as soon as possible.

“We’d certainly like to see some leadership within the sugar industry here in Fiji, in particular the Fiji Sugar Corporation. We’d certainly like to see that there are no pay cuts, particularly amongst the lowest paid workers within the Sugar Corporation.”

Felix Anthony says a response has not yet been received.
