The Guyana Sugar Corporation (Guysuco) is appealing to workers for their continued cooperation to maximize sugar production, in light of the current wet weather. A release from the corporation says harvesting at Skeldon has been ruled out, due to its dependence on mechanization.

Guysuco is urging workers to maximize on the opportunity days available for harvesting to add to its production total of 104, 622 tonnes as of last Thursday. Although this represents the highest first crop production in eight years, Guysuco says it is still below the target. Currently, Guysuco’s factories at Albion, Enmore and Wales are in operation. Workers from Skeldon, rose hall and Blairmont are assisting with harvesting at Albion.

Workers from Blairmont and LBI are assisting with harvesting at Enmore, while workers from Uitvlugt are harvesting at Wales. The ongoing wet weather has suspended harvesting at Skeldon, due to the dependence on mechanization. This decision was taken because the three estates still grinding have a large volume of canes to be harvested for this crop. Guysuco is hoping that the concentration of additional labour would ensure more stable sugar production, despite the current weather.

According to the corporation, excessive industrial action remains a significant hindrance to production, despite its efforts to reach out to workers and address their concerns. It is appealing to workers to recognize that achieving as much sugar as possible during this period is critical to the industry meeting its overall target of 300,000 tonnes this year. Guysuco says the importance of this cannot be understated as it would significantly improve its finances and benefit workers.
