BELGAUM : Thousands of farmers, under the banner of Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatane (SSS), toppled around 25 sugarcane-laden trucks and sent back about 300 vehicles without allowing them to load sugarcane grown at Mamadapur, Galataga and Bedakihal villages in Chikkodi taluk on Tuesday evening.

Galataga and Bedakihal villages in Chikkodi taluk on Tuesday evening. They were protesting against Venkateshwara Sugar Factory of Bedkihal, which started sugarcane crushing, "allegedly" without announcing the price for the cane.

When the factory commenced crushing work on Tuesday, around 2,000 farmers blocked all the roads leading to the factory and restricted the movement of cane-laden lorries.

Recently, SSS activists had submitted a memorandum to the factory management to commence the work only after announcing the price. But without taking their demand seriously, the factory began cutting the cane grown on eight acres in Mamadapur. The agitated farmers rushed to the spot and stopped the factory authorities. They also toppled the vehicles loaded with cane.

SSS’ Chikkodi taluk president Ramesh Patil, chairman Pankaj Tippannavar, secretary Raju Kichade, and vice-president Tatyasab Basannavar were present.
