DHARWAD : Traffic was disrupted for several hours in north Karnataka on Thursday as the  sugarcane growers blocked the road to press for their demands. However, the protest was peaceful.

In response to the rasta roko call given by Karnataka State Sugarcane Growers’ Association, farmers in Kalghatagi taluk of Dharwad district blocked the road and staged a demonstration in front of a sugar factory in Haliyal.

Protests by farmers have also been reported from sugarcane growing areas of Belgaum, Bijapur, Bagalkot, Gulbarga, Bidar, Bijapur, Raichur, Koppal, Gadag, Uttara Kannada, Haveri and Davanagere districts.

The farmers have been demanding the implementation of State Advisory Price (SAP) for sugarcane and an initial payment of Rs 2,200 per tonne till the price of sugar is properly fixed.

The state committee of the Association, which met here on Thursday, had set November as the deadline for the government to meet their demands. They have threatened to intensify the agitation if the demands were not heeded.

Association president Kurbur Shantakumar on Thursday said the government had been indifferent to their demands. "We will wait till November 25, and if the demands are not met, we will lay siege to Vidhan Soudha," he added.

Shantakumar said the sugarcane growers are facing hardship as the government failed to bail them out. He said Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh have implemented SAP, and Karnataka should also follow suit.

Fifty-six of the 62 sugar factories in the state are functioning. Of them, 33 are owned/ managed by legislators and ministers.
