More than 4,000 sugar workers and small cane farmers in Jamaica who lost their jobs following the divestment of sugar factories are to begin receiving financial assistance tomorrow in the form of grants.

Agriculture Minister Dr. Christopher Tufton is to disburse the grants through a joint programme by his ministry and the European Union (EU).

Under the Sugar Adaptation Strategy, 4,600 displaced sugar workers and small cane farmers will over the next 18 months benefit from the grants, which will help them to identify and develop alternative income sources.

The women are slated to collect the equivalent of $170,000 per beneficiary while the men will get $150,000.

The programme will be launched at the Halse Hall Great House in Clarendon at 1 p.m.

The agriculture ministry says it has so far disbursed 180 grants.
