KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) - A union leader says over 13,000 former sugar workers will benefit from a comprehensive severance payout this month as Jamaica continues to seek a buyer for its debt-swamped sugar company.
Vincent Morrison of the National Workers Union says the severance pact was reached with the government Tuesday and will be paid out June 16. He says the total package is worth $30.4 million, with more than half of that money coming from the European Union.
