A strike by sugarcane transporters at Mumias Sugar Company entered the fourth day Thursday, completely paralyzing operations at the company.

The cane transporters say they are forced to work long hours under harsh conditions and are demanding a thirteen percent salary increment.

The Cane Transporters Workers Union Chairman Moses Oundo maintains that the strike will continue until the matter is resolved, despite efforts by Mumias Sugar Company Managing Director Dr. Evans Kidero to reassure the angry workers.

The workers Wednesday parked their trailers along the Bungoma - Mumias Road, completely blocking the road and forcing Public Service Vehicles to seek alternative routes.

However, administration police officers were deployed to the area to unblock the road.

Another parallel strike is now looming among sugarcane farmers who are threatening to join the sugarcane transporters to advocate for better prices for their cane.
