Hundreds of Msambweni residents on Sunday took to the streets to protest at alleged injustice by a sugar company.

They accused Kwale International Sugar Company of reneging on an earlier agreement to resettle and compensate evicted families.

They marched along the Likoni-Lungalunga road carrying placards and tree branches and chanting slogans as they headed to the Msambweni district commissioner’s office where they presented a memorandum.

On stand-by

Regular and Administration police officers in anti-riot gear were on stand-by to control the residents.

They claimed that although the government had asked the sugar firm to resettle and compensate those who had been evicted, they had yet to receive any money.

They also accused some leaders and government officials of colluding with the sugar firm to frustrate and mistreat them.

“A fortnight ago, two children suffered burns when the company evicted us by setting our houses on fire but police have refused to give the family P3 forms,” said Mr Rama Mwazowa, a resident.

Area DC Fatuma Abdulatif said she would meet the relevant authorities to try to resolve the matter.

“I have received your memorandum. We will try to find an amicable solution to the problem,” said the DC, adding that some issues were still pending in court.
