At least 2,000 sugarcane farmers have petitioned Kenya Sugar Board to declare Soin sugar-belt an electoral zone. The zone is currently under Muhuroni.
Farmers representatives urged KSB to gazette Soin sugarcane belt as an electoral area so that farmers can elect a director of their choice. At a meeting held at Soin factory, the farmers representatives said they lacked fair representation at KSB
Kericho DC Samuel Njora, who was the chief-guest during the unveiling of a Sh20 million machine, called on the farmers to be committed to supplying sugarcane to the factory. The DC was accompanied by Soin factory chairman Kipngeno arap Ng’eny.
The DC told the farmers who were formerly shareholders of Muhoroni and Chemelili Sugar companies to apply for loans from banks through the assistance of Soin company."Farmers should borrow loans to develop their agricultural sector. Commitment and self-discipline on how to spend the money will take you steps ahead," Ng’eny.
KSB regional manager Moses Goga assured the farmers that the board was willing to support them in the agricultural sector. He said Soin had the potential to transform their economic being only if they expanded cane growing in areas where there was land for cultivating.
Unlike other sugar companies where farmers had to wait for months before they are paid for cane deliveries, Soin Sugar Company was paying on a weekly basis, according to company’s general manager Francis Akhonya.
