The Board of Directors of the National Committee for Sustainable Sugarcane Development, comprising the National Union of Sugar Cane Growers (CNPR-CNOP), the National Union of Sugarcane Producers of the National Peasant Confederation (CNC), the National Chamber of Sugar and Alcohol Industries, the Secretaries of the Economy, Finance and Public Credit, the Environment, National Resources and Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food, informed that the 2008/2009 harvest production totals 4.9 million tons, which covers the needs of the national market.

As part of the agreements to guarantee certainty over the information regarding sugar, the National Committee for the Sustainable Development of Sugar requested the auditing of sugar inventories from sugar mills on May 21 2009.

The result shows a nationally available physical inventory of sugar, audited by offices accredited by the Secretariat of Public Civil Service, for 2,700,069 tons of sugar available in national territory in the sugar mill warehouses alone, excluding the sugar distributors’ inventory, which guarantees national supplies for the next few months.
The Economy Secretariat, in conjunction with the Secretariats of Finance and Public Credit and agriculture will supervises market supplies to determine whether sugar imports are required to guarantee an inventory ahead of the following harvest due to begin in October.
