This report analysis the environmental, social and health impacts associated with a large scale sugarcane to ethanol biofuels project in Sierra Leone. The project is to be developed by Addax Bioenergy, a division of the Swiss based energy corporation Addax and Oryx group.
The Addax project is to a large extent financed by European Development Finance Institutions and the African Development Bank and therefore applies IFC Performance standards and Equator Principles. In order to meet EU sustainability criteria, the industrial and agricultural operating procedures adopt international best practices from the sugar industry and recommendations from the Roundtable on Sustainable Biofuels (RSB) and the Better Sugarcane Initiative (BSI) of which Addax is a member.
