A Russia diplomat says his country is considering offering Guatemala guns in exchange for its sugar and coffee.

The press attache at Russia's embassy in Guatemala City tells The Associated Press that the deal is in its early stage and the decision would be up to Russia's military. The attache cannot be quoted by name due to internal regulations of Russian diplomacy.

The deal would involve Russia helping Guatemala modernize its obsolete arsenal in exchange for the Central American country's agricultural products, mainly sugar and coffee.

The attache said Friday that the exchange was proposed by the Russian Amb. Nicolay Vladimir and a delegation from that country in a meeting with Guatemalan Vice President Rafael Espada.
