About 10,000 sugarcane farmers in Busoga are set to hold a peaceful demonstration against attacks on Libyan President Col. Muammar Gaddafi by the coalition forces.
The farmers through the Busoga Sugarcane Growers Association are also protesting the subsequent freeze of Gaddafi’s assets including Tropical Bank in Uganda.

According to their letter dated March 30, signed by the association chairman, Mr David Ojwang Omboko, addressed to the Inspector General of Police, Maj Gen. Kale Kayihura, the sugarcane farmers want to hold a street protest today.

The letter copied to both the regional and district police commanders and the district internal security officer, indicates that the demonstration will commence from Kakira sugar factory to Jinja town’s Main Street where a Tropical Bank branch is located.

Showing solidarity
Mr Omboko explains that the farmers need to show solidarity with Gaddafi during this time when his country is facing a crisis because Tropical Bank, which is owned by the Libyan government, has been very instrumental in helping farmers.

“Its Tropical Bank which has been allowing bank over drafts and low interest loans for sugarcane farmers and this has helped many of us to develop,’’ Mr Omboko said.
By press time, police were yet to make a comment on this issue as they were reportedly engaged in a meeting with Jinja Central Market vendors who attempted to riot over failure by their chairman to organise fresh polls.
