BANGKOK, July 28 (TNA) – Sugarcane grower representatives gathered at Government House on Tuesday, demanding the Abhisit administration pay them more quickly the promised return for their produce.
The government has pledged to pay the margin between the primary sugarcane price and the final sugarcane price to sugarcane growers instead of giving it to the Office of the Cane and Sugar Fund to pay debt to the Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives (BAAC).
Representatives from the United Associations of Thai Sugarcane Planters negotiated with the premier on the issue last month and the permanent secretary for industry, Damri Sukhotanang, was assigned to work on the issue.
As a result of a lack of progress, the growers are claiming that Mr Damri has done nothing to fix the problem and has worked too slowly.
However, the planters said they only wanted to submit a letter to the prime minister and wanted a clear answer of how the government would solve the issue. If no improvement is made, they will take further action.
The primary sugarcane price is agreed between sugarcane growers and sugar factories when farmers begin the sugarcane growing season. The growers receive payment from buyers to run their farms.
The final sugarcane price is fixed when the growers cut their crop for actual sale to the sugar refineries. The margin of the primary price and the final price will be paid again by sugar factories. (TNA)
