Kampala — Factories which do not comply with the standards set by the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) on waste management will be closed.

The warning was sounded by environment state minister Jessica Eriyo while touring factories in Jinja and Njeru on Monday and Tuesday.

"I am happy some factories have complied with our directives. Those that have not yet complied face closure," she said.

Eriyo was accompanied by NEMA boss Henry Aryamanya Mugisha

The tour was aimed at assessing how waste is managed and the measures undertaken by factories on the safety of workers and general cleanliness.

"Some of the factories we have inspected do not have effluent treatment plants and discharge untreated waste water into the Nile river and Lake Victoria," she noted.

Eriyo added that some factories have not carried out environment audits, lack protective equipment for workers, have poor chemical management methods and their discharge does not comply with NEMA standards.

She advised factories to acquire environment management plans and to hire officers.

"We hope that they take action for the promises they have made by December," Eriyo said.

The other NEMA officials who accompanied the minister included the spokesperson, Naomi Karekaho, the environmental audit and monitoring officers, Grace Birikadde and Dick Lufafa and the director in charge of environment and compliance, Ayazika Waiswa.

Nile Breweries, Leather Industries of Uganda, Skyfat Tannery factory, Gomba Fisheries industry, Kakira Sugar Works, PAPCO industries, BIDCO, Southern Range Nyanza and Lagoons belonging to the National Water and Sewerage Corporation were inspected.
