The National Union of Plantation and Agricultural Workers of Uganda has signed a deal with the Sugar Corporation of Uganda (SCOUL) to resolve employee disputes.
The memorandum follows a week-long strike by the over 500 workers demanding proper working conditions and wage increment.
JB Pajobo, the union general secretary, who also doubles as the Workers MP, signed on behalf of the employees, while the SCOUL chief executive, NV Bapat, endorsed for his organisation.
The agreement pushed for the unconditional end to the strike as negotiations continued. It also called for non victimisation of the workers who were involved in the strike.
"The managements of SCOUL undertakes not to victimise the workers who participated in the illegal strike. "However, those who are involved in the unlawful activities face action as per the law," the agreement reads in part.
"Both parties agree to continue the negotiations as planned immediately after calling off the illegal strike and the parties accept to conclude the negotiations before the end of September," it added.
Suresh Sharma, the Mehta Group regional director in charge of African operations, said the agreed terms and issues would be resolved by the end of the month
