Kampala — Sugarcane growers have demanded better prices. Through the Uganda National Association of Sugarcane Growers, the farmers alleged that they were paid an average of sh34,000 per tonne.
They said a tonne of sugarcanes can produce an average of 90kg of sugar, which costs about sh162,000, adding that "it is too much compared to what we are paid."
James Rwampwanyi, the association vice-chairman, said sugarcane growers, like other farmers, have a right to fair prices and contracts. He called for the enactment of a law to guide sugarcane prices.
"We still have challenges of opening our markets to the rest of East Africa, which has a more developed sugar sector, with sugar policies that are being implemented and monitored," he said during a meeting with Members of Parliament at Hotel Africana in Kampala.
The MPs said Parliament would discuss and address their grievances.
