The Vietnam Sugar and Sugar Cane Association warned that the industry would face severe difficulties after entering the WTO due to low capacity output.
Lacking modern farm equipment and transport facilities, small-scale sugar cane farming means domestic output could be as low as 4-5 tons per hectare.
Productivity is 2-3 times higher in Thailand and Australia.
The association has asked for more help from the government on new high-productivity breeds and strategies to help sweeten the industry.
